I am often asked by business owners, “What is social media all about and how can it help my business?” Or, “Is social media really worth all the time it takes to manage?” To answer these questions, I have compiled my top 10 reasons a business owner should use social media. You will draw your own conclusions as to its value.

1. Build and maintain trusting relationships with new and existing clients
When new or existing customers see and engage in your social media presence, they begin to regard you as a friend. Most of us would rather give our business to our friends.

2. Use it as a market research tool
Many social media sites, like Twitter are great for market research. If you want to find out what is hot and what your customers are talking about. You can get sales, promotion and blogging ideas.

3. Announce sales, promotions and events
Because you can build your networks through your social media communities, you can easily announce sales, promotions and events to people who are already interested in hearing your message. It’s free and very targeted advertising.

4. Lead/new customer-client generation
When people agree to be part of your network, you have instantly added new leads to your potential customer base. Over time, you will begin to see increases in sales conversions because of your social network. It’s like being at a cocktail party. Social media is a great “mixer” and place to network.

5. Generate increased website and in-store traffic with indirect SEO value
Social networks have places for you to add links to your websites and blogs. Eventually, people will click on those links and visit your site or check out your location to take advantage of that sale. Many of the links to your websites can create added search engine optimization (SEO) value to your site, thus indirectly boosting your search engine find-ability.

6. Target specific demographics through the use of group affiliations
Many of the social media sites have “groups” you can join. It’s like being a member of an association of like-minded people. This is a great place to connect to the very specific people who are interested in your message.

7. Engage your community so they can feel your presence
As a member of your community, you get to interact with other people and businesses. This gives your business a human and friendly quality most people enjoy while conducting business.

8. Build your brand recognition as trustworthy or knowledgeable
When you make posts to your social media sites, you position yourself and your business and the ones who are knowledgeable and trustworthy. Be careful not to “spam” your community by always trying to sell yourself. (See number 10)

9. Provide customer service
Social media sites are the perfect place to answer questions about your products or services, or help connect people to other people who can help them with their problems. Even if you don’t directly benefit from helping others connect, the customer who does benefit will remember you and your unselfish assistance and it will help create loyalty to you.

10. Be of service and value to your community
Use your social media to add value to those who connect to you. Give out free tips, add links to interesting articles, create “how-to” videos, and be of service to others in any way you can. This is the essence of social media.
If operated with best practices, your social media efforts will reward you over and over again.
